1. Belly Laughs
I don’t know of very many things quite as satisfying as a deep, authentic, belly-laugh – and I actually think the very best belly-laughs begin over something tiny. I think you have to be in that place where you’re aware of the little delights in life and picking up on the humor in the not-so-delightful to catch those tiny somethings…but once they’re caught, I’m not sure there’s a better way to spend two minutes than cracking up with your friend or your sibling or your co-worker or yourself!
2. Foggy morning, cold hands, warm mug
Did your grandma ever hand you a steaming hot cup of something and say, “here, drink this, it’ll warm up your bones!” or something to that effect? Mine didn’t, either, and I’m glad – because I don’t know if I’d have such a romantic relationship with the perfect cup of coffee or the perfect steamed-milk-hot-cocoa if she had – and there aren’t a whole lot of things I like more than wrapping my fingers around a warm mug and sipping away as I watch the fog lift.
There is something about the flickering warm light of a candle’s flame that will always, always, always make me feel at home. When I first moved from D.C. to Northeast Georgia two months ago, the very first thing I did was buy candles and place them all over my new apartment. Whenever I was home, candles were burning, and my heart was slowly warming to the transition. I say, if you’re feeling down, it’s time to warm up the room!
4. Good food
I’m a certified foodie – unless there’s an actual certification for a foodie, in which case I’m just a wanna-be certified foodie – either way, I love food. I love the colors of food, I love the heart-filling, paradigm-shifting, human-connecting conversations that happen over food, and I love the reality that cooking for or sharing a meal with someone makes you part of the nourishment of that someone and yourself in the most multifaceted sense! Make someone dinner tonight – open a bottle of wine you’ve been saving just because. Share life!
5. Fresh flowers
Flowers are so very lovely – live ones – the kind that smell perfect and sway when you walk past them and are still changing and blending together. The kind of flowers that remind you that life is vibrant – the kind that surprise you by popping up in your yard – the kind someone buys for you just because. Next time you walk past a particularly lovely flower shop- treat yourself- there’s no good reason not to.
Kacie Lynn is a lover of Jesus and of all things creative and colorful. She recently spent 11 months in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia, loving the unseen and sharing the hope of the Gospel with those who hadn’t yet heard it. Since returning from that trip in August, she’s begun working in Mobilization at Adventures in Missions. She spends her nights and weekends crunching leaves under her feet, rapping to J. Biebs songs in her truck, baking banana bread to share with her roommate, and belly-laughing about absolutely everything.
