On Monday I finished the first round of edits to my very first eBook. It was an accomplishment of epic proportions even though the book is still far from done.
The thing about writing a book (or any creative work, really) is that it just takes it out of you. It requires focus unlike anything else and puts your heart and soul on display in a way that feels very, very naked.
And that can be scary.
Doesn’t it seem like the biggest, most important seasons always come with a hearty helping of fear?
I don’t know if this ever happens to you, but it’s always when I’m doing the biggest things that I feel the smallest.
Sometimes the world and the obstacles I’m barreling towards start to feel so big that I want to retreat, go home, move back in with my parents, and throw in the towel on this big, adult life.
Sometimes I run forward, full-tilt, and sometimes I want to crumble, balling up in the fetal position until someone brings me a teddy bear and some soup.
But these hard, important things are just that, important. And it’s important that we keep going—no matter what fear tries to throw at us.
For me this week, that looked like plugging away at my book edits. It looked like reworking sentences and pushing forward when I most wanted to give up and close my laptop.
It’s a small book packed to the brim with inspiration—a call to dream and see and notice—a charge to breathe and create and believe.
And this is something I’ve found to be key when it comes to creative and important pursuits—
We need people in our corner cheering us on and reminding us to keep going.
And as I’ve been working on my first book, Katie’s first book did that for me.
Katie’s words are lovely and on February 3rd she’s kicking off an online book club, which just might be the inspiration and encouragement you need too.
So today, do something important. Try something new, go for something big, and know that fear is going to do everything it can to stop you. But don’t give in. Grab your teddy bear and bring him along for the ride—because there are important, beautiful, creative things for you to do in the world today.
Don’t let anything stop you.
What kinds of things make you feel small and scared? How do you get yourself to keep going?
