Opening the door and the cardboard box sitting on the front steps makes my eyes go wide and my smile glean. Shaking the cardboard box never grows old. Whether the package is even mine, whether I ordered it myself from Amazon and know exactly what it is, I love packages. The curiosity, the anticipation, my patience disappears. The packages that come from loved ones filled with love and surprises are the best packages of all.
2. Crawling into bed
At the end of any day, especially the busy ones when my eyes are drooping-my bed is a lovely thing. Crawling under my blankets and wrapping them tightly around me like a caterpillar in a cocoon. Surrounded by my massive body pillow I am enveloped in some sort of fluffy cloud. Falling asleep protected by the palace that is my bed.
I once worked at a very fancy restaurant/hotel that would host a lot of weddings in the fall. Between waiting tables I would always rush to peek out the window for a glimpse of the beautiful ceremony. The father who tearfully gives away his baby girl and the couple whose eyes meet imagining eternity together makes me cry every time.
This summer I worked at a bakery, which is one of the best jobs ever. I never got over the fact I was getting paid to bake cakes and make cookie dough. The owner was constantly making new treats with new recipes and every time I saw her creating something new I would beg for her to teach me. There’s just something amazing about baking. When a bunch of ingredients come together and suddenly you have a wonderful smelling and tasting dessert. The only downfall of working at a bakery is the potential weight gain…
I fell in love with stars one night in Valdivia, Chile. I had spent the day climbing an active volcano and that night I was exploring the hot springs beside the volcano. It was that night I looked up and saw the entire milky way. It was the kind of sight I had only seen in pictures in science textbooks. I was amazed at the countless lights twinkling in the sky. Then a star shot across the sky and I got to close my eyes and make a wish. Stars remind me of my wishes and dreams.
