1. Little House on the Prairie
I read the first book for the first time when I was probably about 7. I read it most recently when I was about 23. There is something about Little House on the Prairie for me that is quintessentially Christmas. There is a Christmas celebration in every book, and all of these cozy scenes with warm fires and handmade gifts embody what I love most about Christmas. A winter cannot go by where I read these books. All of them.
2. Handwritten Anything
As long as I can remember, writing things down on paper has been more cathartic and life-giving than writing things on the computer. This hasn’t always been realistic, like when writing a 25 page paper in college, but something about all those words with their uneven slants and smeared gel ink pens feels like how it’s supposed to be for me.
3. Instant coffee
I know this sounds like an affront to coffee lovers everywhere, but it is also the only kind my mom ever drank and it brings her back to me. The tin container, the smell, watching her spoon it into a mug of hot water. It’s a reminder to me of the sacrifices she made for us. She drank cheap coffee for us.
4. Inspirational Quotes
They’re written on my mirror, in notebooks, on canvases, and in frames all over. Some come and go with the season of my life I’m in, and some will always be favorites. It’s a way for me to reach across a great barrier and have someone offer encouragement for something I thought I was alone in experiencing. It’s a connecting experience.
Preferably in bright colors, but there isn’t an outfit that gray doesn’t go with. Cozying up during the colder months with a good book, a good coffee, and a cardigan somehow makes my world feel safe and comforting. The image I have in my head of all my happy Christmas celebrations to come show me welcoming in friends from the snow wearing a cranberry cardigan, straight out of a Hallmark movie.
