Oliver James is my cat (named after a Fleet Foxes song). He’s a gigantic, floppy Manx/Tabby mix with no tail. He’s hilarious because he basically plays hard to get all day long but every night he cuddles in close to me and sleeps by my side. He sees me getting into my pajamas and I can see his little face go “Bedtime? Okay!” Living alone can be lonely at times so it’s so nice to have the little guy around.
There is an old quote that says “Music is what feelings sound like” and I completely agree. While I don’t play an instrument, my entire life, music has been my greatest pastime. My sister is my music soul-mate and over the years we have spent some beautiful moments sharing our passion of music with each other, whether it be talking about lyrics that affected us deeply, live music experiences that brought us to tears or albums that have taken us on an incredible journey. It also helps that I live in Colorado, which is the home to one of the most spectacular amphitheaters in the world, Red Rocks.
The city I live in, Denver, CO, is exploding with microbreweries and I have totally been swept up in it. A new brewery opens ever week! It also helps that my fiance works as a brewer. He and I love checking out new brews all over town. There is nothing quite like a well-brewed glass of bubbly, hoppy joy.
4. Speaking another language
I studied Spanish as my undergraduate degree. Choosing Spanish as a college major does not usually guarantee a defined career path or lucrative job, but my parents always encouraged me to pursue my passions so I kept with it. I lived in Spain and Costa Rica to get better and it took years of mistakes and making a fool out of myself in front of natives to master it. Now when it flows so smoothly, I am thankful that the hard work paid off. I now work in immigration law and I speak Spanish all day every day.
5. Keeping up with my girls
I constantly find myself in awe of modern technology. After college, the majority of my best girlfriends scattered all over the country. I just got engaged and 6 out of 7 bridesmaids don’t live in the same state I live in. I have to say that long google hangouts, group texts and phone calls have brought me so much happiness. They allow me to feel super close to my girls even when they’re far away.
Michelle Boehm is Stephanie’s best friend in the whole, entire world. She’s is a brilliant paralegal in an immigration office—speaking Spanish like a pro and walking people through obtaining legal status in the US. She’s a music nut, and knows more about bands, concerts, and new albums than anyone in the world (Stephanie’s convinced). She’s engaged to a brilliant man named Alan and will be a married woman in just under a year. Suffice it to say she’s the one of the greatest people Stephanie’s ever met, and describing her in a paragraph is a tall order for someone who has known her and loved her since she was an 8-year-old with straight across bangs and braces. 🙂 You can follow her on Instagram for photos of her cute cat Oliver, her hunky fiance, and the gorgeous Mile High City.
