1. Radical Friends
At the start of college, I began going to a Bible study for young adults. I quickly learned to love being there, and I quickly began loving the people who were with me. A few years after that, I felt as if I lacked someone whom I could trust with anything, and whom would love and encourage me—I like to refer to her as my “soul sister”. I began to pray and eventually just trusted God with everything that I had left at his feet (my social life being one of those things). It seemed like God put me on the back burner and had forgotten about me—until I met LaRynn. LaRynn and I immediately bonded and connected. God answered my prayer! I found my soul sister! We began doing life together, and getting to know each other better. Today, LaRynn is still my soul sister, and our friendship has truly blossomed. Besides our friendship in itself, she is one of the loveliest things I know.
2. Bright Colors
I live on the east coast, which recently has become a prime spot for a “snow-pocalypse” (a major snow storm where everything is shut down). I’ve been so bored of the dull colors of winter, such as: blacks, dark blues, and grays. I’m so happy for the warmer weather, because that means brighter colors! It can be the bright green of the grass, the bright blue of the sky, or the bright pink and coral of my favorite scarf. I think that brighter colors make you happier, and quite literally, brighten up your day!
3. Red Lipstick
I never thought that I was bold enough to pull off ruby-red lipstick. Quite frankly, red lipstick reminds me of my grandmother, and I never wanted to be classified as “vintage”. When the Taylor Swift craze swept our nation, I saw red lipstick everywhere. It was the new thing. I still was not convinced, but just recently I decided to be brave. I bought my first tube of red lipstick for only $3.99 and gave it a go. It was uncomfortable at first—it would smear on my teeth and my tissue whenever I’d wipe my nose. Now that it’s been a few months, I’ve finally mastered it. It’s classy and it’s fun—it’s a good way to spice up a plain outfit!
Coming from a family of five kids, I rarely had me-time growing up. When I went away to college, I experienced it for the first time. I don’t have a roommate, so being alone at first was definitely an adjustment. Now that I’m more active on campus, it seems as if I’m around people all of the time. I love that! I’m a very relational person who thrives off of friendships and conversations—but I also need time by myself. Recently, I was treated to a manicure at a spa. It was just the nail technician and I. I didn’t have to talk to anyone, I just sat in my chair and dozed off in sweet thoughts of cake and shoes. As a full-time college student, I’m always on the go, so it’s nice to step back and enjoy time for myself—especially for my sanity.
When I was a senior in high school, I traveled to France. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with macarons. Was it the beautiful pastel color of the cookie? Was it the crunch of the cookie that led to a soft and flaky inside? Was it the sweet taste of desserts français? It was all of it. For my birthday, my sisters gifted me a box of macarons. As soon as I indulged in the beautiful cookies, I was brought back to sitting in a cafe in France without a care in the world. It was just my delicious cookies and I.
