1. People with Passion
Whether it’s opening a local restaurant or starting a brand-new blog, when people pursue their passion, it reminds me how much art there is in all of us. If I had my way, I’d buy from every indie shop that crossed my path if only to be a voice that says, “Keep going.”
2. Vintage Clothes
I love my skinny jeans as much as the next girl, but lately I’ve been finding so much delight in all things vintage: full skirts, high waists, red lips, and woolen sweaters. I troll our city’s Goodwills like they’re goldmines, imaging all the stories those classic clothes could tell.
Most days, I take my gifts for granted, from a lack of pain to food in the fridge to a husband who loves me steady as a mountain range. But when I fail—whether that means speaking sharply, hurting a friend, or holding anger in my heart—I’m reminded again that none of my life has been earned. Though I am prone to choose myself and sulk in pride, Jesus isn’t—and He loves me. There’s no better gift than that.
It might seem strange to hear winter is the time of year when I prize daylight most, but sometimes it is the very lack that makes a thing more sweet. When sunlight breaks the sky each morning, illuminating all that once was dark, the beauty of it takes my breath away. And when the sun sets, even if it feels too early at half past four, I swear, the golden fire glory is as good as any hymnal.
5. Hand-Drawn Illustrations
In our decidedly digital world, there’s something so beautiful about putting pen to paper—and, even as a writer, I can see that’s true of more than words. Lately, I am so drawn (ha!) to art that’s made by hand: on Etsy, at Anthropologie, on blogs, even in my living room late one night.
Shanna Mallon started Food Loves Writing back in 2008, as a way to remember her grandma and write about her life through food. Since then it’s become the place that’s led her to to an entirely new way of eating, a new home in Nashville and the love of her life, Tim. Now they run the site together. Follow Shanna on Twitter @foodloves and keep up with Food Loves Writing on Facebook.
